Abstract
Clinical observation were performed on 124 cases of acute organophosphate intoxication who admitted to Department of internal medicine, Chung Nam National University Hospital from Jan. 1973 to September 1975.
The results were as follows:
1. The causes of intoxication were suicidal attempt in 73.4% and accidental intoxication on spraying in 26.6% of cases.
2. Male were affected more frequently (71.8:28.2) On seasonal prevalence, the intoxication was most common during Summer, especially in July and August.
3. Average dose of atropine to maintain the state of atropinization during the first 24 hrs was 36. 6 mg and the average dose of 2-PAM during admission was 1.17 gm.
4. Side reaction after atropine administration were psychiatric symptoms such as hallucination, agitation, irritability, etc. The symptoms were frequently improved with sedatives in our Med. department, but only 1 case was transferred to psychiatry. There was no relationship apparently between dosage and side reaction of atropine.
Side reaction of 2-PAM was non specific.
5. In the Hospital, mortality rate was 10. 5% (suicidal mortality rate: 13. %, accidental intoxicated mortality rate: 3.03%). If 5 cases of devitalized and discharged patients were thought to be dead, the over all mortality rate was 14.5%.
